Drop Everything!

Drop Everything and Read event!

Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) is an international event designed to stimulate the love of books and all things literary.

This weekend The Fantasy and SciFi Network is participating by promoting the wonderful worlds of SciFi and Fantasy with its online D.E.A.R. event. Promotions and special pricing on a plethora of fine novels are rocketing through cyberspace from Friday, April 10th through Sunday, April 12th, 2015.

DISPASSIONATE LIES and SCHRODINGER'S CAT are just two of the tantalizing tales coming at you for only 99 cents.

DISPASSIONATE LIES  The year is 2035 and the world is emerging from a devastating economic collapse. Computer guru, Ladesque, finds her task of restoring the world’s internet capabilities, dull until...

She’s approached by Paul, an attractive FBI agent intent on recruiting her to an ultra-secret project. There’s only one problem—the asexuality she was born with thirty-five years ago, vanishes sending her on a quest to uncovering the secrets of her past--not an easy task when all things digital have been compromised...but her future depends on it.

SCHRÖDINGER'S CAT   In one of her worlds, Chorie’s young daughter is dying—a drama that quickly contaminates her other, much rosier, reality. Before long, the emotional burden of dealing with two separate lives spawns heated legal battles, endangers her role as mother and wife, and causes people in both universes to judge her insane. As her lives begin to crumble, so does Chorie’s soul.

DISPASSIONATE LIES entered in Crime contest

It might seem a little odd to enter a near-future SciFi in a crime-writing contest, but crime happens in 2035 as readers discover in my latest novella DISPASSIONATE LIES.

From hackers who totally destroy the global internet to the intrigue surrounding the cause of infertility and lack of libido in a generation of women, DISPASSIONATE LIES is full of illicit activities and intrigue. I believe it will hold its own in the 2015 Crime Writers of Canada Author Ellis Awards contest.

My dispassionate heroine, Ladesque is charged with restoring internet capabilities and lifting the world out of a severe recession brought on by cyber-crime. However, that all takes a back seat when she starts investigating the reason her generation has lost it's sexuality. It may be impossible for her to track down the truth. Not only have hackers compromised all digital data, both government and industry tenaciously use that excuse to thwart her research.

The story becomes even more real when the reader takes in the back pages of the novel where I've posted links to real life headlines about hackers, pharmaceutical pollution, government experiments, espionage, technology-in-waiting and other potential sources of crime.

DISPASSIONATE LIES is a warning about what crime might look like in 2035, or perhaps even next year at the rate we're going.

What does it actually mean that Schrödinger's cat is both alive and dead?

Here's my answer to the question as posted on the Quora forum:

Schrödinger's thought experiment about the cat was indeed meant to draw attention to the absurdity discovered in quantum physics, quanta being the particles that make up atoms and particles of energy such as electrons and photons (particles of light).

Physicists were saying that until a quantum is observed and measured it exists in a quasi state of realty. It is only our observation and measurement of quanta that causes them to condensate out of all their possible locations into a single location in time and space and take their place in our world as either matter or energy. This notion was being accepted by scientists but Schrödinger thought we ought to be looking for an explanation that made more sense. Things either are or aren't, exist or don't, are here or are there--just like his cat has to be either dead or alive, whether or not we can see it.

To this day, however, physicists believe in and follow the Copenhagen interpretation of the nature of quanta and all experiments seem to prove that it is true-- at the subatomic level, matter and energy do not exist in a tangible state until we observe them. In an effort to make sense of this, physicist Hugh Everett came up with his Many Worlds Theory that hypothesizes that everything that can possibly happen, does happen--in a universe somewhere. Each quantum exists in every possible state in every possible location at every possible moment in time although we can only observe a single state.

What does this mean for Schrödinger's Cat? It means that reality splits in two the moment the scientist opens the box to observe the state of the cat. In one universe the scientist finds the cat alive and in another universe, he finds the cat dead. This supposedly makes more sense than having a cat that is neither dead or alive until it is observed.

This also means in a universe somewhere I won the lottery, and in many others, I don't even exist. Do we get to choose which universe we observe and inhabit? Can we communicate with alternate universes? Is fate, choice or circumstance creating our lives, our worlds, our universe?

"Great Strong Story--a wonderful read"

"I found that it was hard to put down (even for sleep)"

"I just had to finish it; I needed to know what was going to happen next..."

"I liked the... Discussion and Teaching guide at the end"

Tell us, Laurence, what inspired you to write this series?
While growing up, I always envisioned a superhero that had many ultimate powers and a unique weapon. When watching the nightly news and hearing all the bad things around the world, I wished I had powers that could stop natural disasters, find people that were missing and put an end to wars. Have you ever felt that way?

My boyhood years were consumed by baseball, football, track, taekwondo along with other undertakings, so I didn’t act upon my writing and my thoughts.

One day in 2006 while working in the steel processing business, my place of employment for almost fifteen years changed hands for the third time and I was fighting for my job, again.

In the same year my first granddaughter, Kendall, "Papa's Angel" was born. This was one of the most uplifting moments of my life – one of the few times I remember crying with happiness. It was during this time when my emotions were running wild that I became inspired as well as determined to put my pent-up thoughts on paper.

My first novel was published in 2012. I am now celebrating the release of the second novel in the Metatron series: METATRON: The Mystical Blade

One ruthless demon faces one relentless teenager…

Thirteen-year-old Tyler Thompson is on the verge of becoming a superhero, but he must prove himself so he can earn the remainder of his superpowers and fulfill his destiny.

When his grandfather, Benjamin, is held prisoner at AREA 51, where the eternal powers are presumed to be hidden, Tyler attempts to penetrate the base’s heavy security. However, Dr. Mason Payne, the evil scientist who killed Tyler's father, has insidious plans of his own.

Hunted by an unknown entity, Tyler races against the clock to retrieve the superpowers, rescue his family and help the others who are depending on him. And when all hope seems lost, help comes in a power he didn’t know he possessed—a mysterious weapon known as The Mystical Blade.

A little about Laurence
http://www.amazon.com/Laurence-St.-John/e/B007XFYJRU/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1While working in the steel industry, my place of employment changed hands for the third time. Fortunately I was able to retain my job.
In the same year my first granddaughter Kendall was born. This was one of the most uplifting moments of my life. It was at this time when I became inspired as well as determined to write my penned-up thoughts on paper.
A few years later, and many hours of writing, editing, revising and re-editing, it was finished.  This journey had many bumps and curves in the road but at the end, it was all worth it.
