It's Destiny

Author Melissa Wray is celebrating the second anniversary of her novel, DESTINY ROAD, with an emotional behind-the-scenes look at the writing of the book as well as a fantastic Rafflecopter draw.

Tell us about DESTINY ROAD, Melissa.

What sparked the idea to write Destiny Road?
Recently Melissa Wray was asked this question by Uncommon YA. Here is her very personal response.

We moved to North Queensland when I was 14. After a year or so Mum could see that something about Townsville and I did not mix. Strangely enough it was her suggestion to ring my dad and ask if I could move back south.

So I did. Then I packed my bags and moved 3,000km away to live with him. This decision is what sparked the idea for Destiny Road.

Now I never set out to write this story, let alone have it published. It just kind of happened. It came about because one night I was lying in bed and couldn’t sleep. There was an unspoken conversation going on in my mind. It was a conversation that I regret not having and has played on my mind over the years. This particular night it got the better of me so I got up and began to write. It wasn’t until after I read through those mad ramblings a couple of weeks later that I thought hmmm … I could create a story from this. So I began writing. I passed my 10,000 word milestone. Then 20 then 30 then before I knew it 50,000 words had been typed.

You see I think about that one phone call I made all those years ago sometimes. I have often thought about how that decision, that one pivotal moment that is talked about in Destiny Road, really did change the course of my life. I’m sure as you're reading this you can look back over your life, and pinpoint one moment that has shaped it in a big way. I truly believe that Dad saying yes when I asked was a determining factor in how things have turned out for me.

One afternoon I was sitting with him. He got to talking about his philosophy on life and death. Dad had been fighting a battle against cancer for a while at this point and I was kneeling next to him as he sat on his reclining chair. He was holding my hand as he shared these ideas on life and death. He said to me "It’s cool.

Whatever happens, it’s cool." My dad used cool a lot when he spoke. He was pretty cool. He was also a big believer in God. So that afternoon he said "It’s cool if I die because I get to meet my maker." ‘Then he said "But it’s cool if I live because I get to be with the ones I love." This was his philosophy. Either way was cool with him.

I remember kneeling there, holding his hand and wishing I could say thankyou to him. Thanks for saying yes all those years ago. Thanks for that pivotal moment in my life. I wanted him to know how much that meant. But I couldn’t. I just couldn’t get those words out.

That night he passed away.

I never did get to tell him and have regretted that for the past 10 years. So you see once the spark to write Destiny Road was lit, it had to finished. It was my tribute, my thankyou and I am beyond thrilled it was published.

Now I’m not going to bore you with my views on life and death but I can’t help but wonder something, because anyone who knew my dad, Rod Morris, and anyone who knew his sense of humour ... well I can’t help but wonder if there wasn’t a helping hand when Morris Publishing (no relation) chose to publish Destiny Road. I like to think so.

Share my Life

I understand that there are some lonely and bored folks out there, so I invite you to partake in my life.  I have lots of activities and fun I'm willing to share with you.

First, someone could offer to do my late-night volunteer shift on Friday. You can have fun scouring the streets for crime.  Since you won't get home until 3 in the morning, I will need a different volunteer to take my place at Saturday's Farmerettes' Fun Spiel.  Don't worry, you don't need to know how to curl, I'll pay your entry fee, your first game is at 10 am and they'll feed you and give you a prize.  If you find you like curling, you could take my place for the last two league games of the season.

I need someone who likes animals to arrange a vet appointment within the next month for annual checkups for my two dogs.  Also, if you don't mind, could you take the Pom in for a grooming, please? (I'll pay all bills.)

Someone who likes toddlers could pick my grandson up from Day Care a couple of evenings in the coming weeks.  Contact me, and after a criminal check, I'll give you the pertinent info.

Among my writer friends, there must be someone eager to finish my novella.  We only need about 5,000 more words to wrap it up.  If you don't have your own ideas on how to end it, I do have a rough outline you could work with.

If you're better at blogging than penning novels, could you cook up something short and sweet for Criminal Minds at Work?  I'll give you credit.

If you like making people happy, I could do with someone to run my trivia contest.  http://www.eileenschuh.com/did-you-know I'd even let you draw the winners and notify them.  This would be a  joyous, rewarding opportunity and might improve your feeling of self-worth.

For those with secretarily aptitude, could someone book me the best flight to Denver in October?  I'm going there to promote my very first published novel, SCHRÖDINGER'S CAT at the Mile High Sci-Fi Convention.

I'll keep my nail and hair appointments, but if you're feeling a bit insane, you could sit in for me during my Psychiatrist's appointment....oh, wait.  I better keep that one, but I'm willing to give up my spot next Thursday with the Urologist.  I'll just buy another year's supply of Depends until I can get back on the list.

Although I want to keep my trip to Yellowknife at Easter, I could be bribed to release my tickets to the Elk Point Dinner Theater on April Fool's Day.  And for a good bottle of white wine, someone could jump on my ATV and muddle through the puddles at the Ashmont Quad Rally the following weekend.

I really need someone to type up the minutes from last night's executive meeting.  As a follow up, would you mind playing secretary for me at the General Meeting at the end of April?  Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you research the feasibility of changing the name of our society?

If you like parties, please volunteer to cook a gluten-free birthday supper for my middle daughter on the 14th.  I'll pay you extra if you clean up afterwards.

I think that about covers things (for now) until the end of April.  Thanks, guys.

I'm happy to host Alberta author, Jan Markley, who is celebrating the launch of her second book in her MegaByte series, "Dead Bird Through the Cat Door". I interviewed Jan a year or so ago when she received her first publishing contract and am excited that she's enjoying continuing success.

And yes, there is a give-away happening here again...

Take it away, Jan!

Side kicks we love
and...
Dead Bird through the Cat Door book give-away

My favourite side-kick was Karate from Batfink. He was the not-so-super slick side-kick to Batfink who would say things like “I ate my way out. I love caramel” to Batfinks “Your bullets can not hurt me, my wings are like a shield of steel.”

Batfink & Karate
Side-kick characters serve a number of purposes. They can make the hero look good, provide for comic relief (or be the straight man), be a companion of the hero, a counterpoint to the hero (offer a different pov) and give the hero someone to talk to. Or in the case of Todd, the side-kick to Cyd and Jane in Dead Bird through the Cat Door, they can irritate the twin detectives.

In Dead Frog on the Porch we met Todd. He was the leader of the Safari Sleepoveer at the Zoo when Cyd and Jane were in hot pursuit of the Cheese Pie Man (the culprit). Todd interrupted a near-strangulation of the twins. So he was a bit helpful.

Well he’s back as a full on side-kick character in Dead Bird through the Cat Door and his main role seems to be annoying Cyd and Jane. I love this character. He’s funny, he’s smart, he’s ambitious and he has the ear of the bad guys which comes in handy. He creates a lot of conflict between the sisters. He’s got a crush on their mom (which is gross) and one of the twins has a crush on him (though she won’t admit it). The twins need him because he has access to the bird sanctuary where some interesting goings on are happening including the kidnapping of cats to kill birds. But he’s a bit high maintenance. He’s made me really appreciate the role of the side-kick character.
