She turned. He was standing in the soft
shadows of the summer evening, airbrushed by the faint orange of the flickering
street light. He was chiselled and symmetric and positively gorgeous. ~excerpt
DISPASSIONATE LIES
Favourite
passages can be moving, intense, symbolic or simply nicely put together as is the
above excerpt from my latest release DISPASSIONATE LIES.
DISPASSIONATELIES is the first novel I’ve published that isn’t set in my home province. I
moved the story south of the border into Colorado because I love that state. It
shares the Rocky Mountains with my home province of Alberta Canada. Here I use
setting to also create mood and foreshadowing:
Out her window, far beyond
the house across the street, toward the west, across the flat prairie, the city
limits brushed up against the Rockies.
She thought maybe she’d visit
the mountains today to seek their comfort and wisdom. Perhaps she was crazy,
but when she touched their granite, she heard their stories.
Although their birth had
been violent, the years since had honed their peaks and softened their
shoulders. Today, they towered above their people, massive and silent and
unmoving. They controlled the rivers and the rainfall, the wind and weather for
an entire continent. Basking in their shadows and breathing their air was intimidating.
However, the closer one moved toward their cliffs, the closer one came to
sharing their energy. “Lean your back against their rocks,” someone once said,
“and their wisdom is yours.”
